Apologies for Slavery

mid-afternoon on Monday, the 14th of April 2008 by Chad

An Open Letter to the Democratic Party makes it pretty darn clear who is responsible and should apologize.

An Open Letter to the Democratic Party
By Lt. Colonel Frances Rice,U.S. Army Retired: Contributor to the LHI
“We, African American citizens of the United States, declare and assert:
Whereas in the early 1600’s 20 African men and women were landed in Virginia from a Dutch ship as slaves and from that tiny seed grew the poisoned fruit of plantation slavery which shaped the course of American development,
Whereas reconciliation and healing always begin with an apology and an effort to repay those who have been wronged,
Whereas the Democratic Party has never apologized for their horrific atrocities and racist practices committed against African Americans during the past two hundred years, nor for the residual impact that those atrocities and practices and current soft bigotry of low expectations are having on us today,
Whereas the Democratic Party fought to expand slavery and, after the Civil War, established Jim Crow Laws, Black Codes and other repressive legislation that were designed to disenfranchise African Americans,
Whereas the Ku Klux Klan was the terrorist arm of the Democratic Party, and their primary goal was to intimidate and terrorize African American voters, Republicans who moved South to protect African Americans and any other whites who supported them,
Whereas, according to leading historians (both black and white), the horrific atrocities committed against African Americans during slavery and Reconstruction were financed, sponsored, and promoted by the Democratic Party and their Ku Klux Klan supporters,
Whereas from 1870 to 1930, in an effort to deny African Americans their civil rights and to keep African Americans from voting Republican, thousands of African Americans were shot, beaten, lynched, mutilated, and burned to death by Ku Klux Klan terrorists from the Democratic Party,

It continues on giving many examples, right up to the present.  But it’s true.  Blaming the whole US for slavery is like blaming your whole body when you break your leg.  Bringing it down to those that actively supported slavery reveals the Democratic party in the past and present.

Tax Time

mid-morning on Sunday, the 13th of April 2008 by Chad

Rachel Lucas feels the pain!

And you know what, right this second, I’m NOT proud to be an American. I’m not even proud to be a human being today. I am certainly not enjoying the fact that I share air and a planet with whatever assholes invented and maintain the IRS.

It makes me want to blow shit up. Not people, that would be taking it too far, but definitely shit. Like watermelons and outhouses and maybe even a taco truck.

Go read what she really thinks about taxes.  Hehehhh…

Me, I’m just a little worried.  I’ve got 2 days left and haven’t heard from my accountant.  Last year I had to take out a 8k$ personal loan to pay the feds.  Then I didn’t do nearly as much side work last year, so I’m hoping for break even, and may even get a refund.  But I don’t have any idea yet!

The Guerilla Wedding…

Weddings are expensive. Even without everything the “Wedding Industrial Complex” insists you need, the basics can really add up, and site fees at popular wedding venues can cost thousands. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money, a simple home or City Hall ceremony can be great – but what if you really want that amazing dream wedding location? That’s where the guerilla wedding comes in.

Me and the wife went off to the Poconos and got married there, but this sounds like a great idea.  Why spend 10, 20, or up to 50 thousand bucks only to be in debt for the part of your life you need money the most?

Apple Cake

in the early evening on Monday, the 7th of April 2008 by Chad

1 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
5 1/2 Tbsp unsalted butter, room temperature
1 egg, beaten
1/2 cup whole milk
1 medium Cortland or other baking apple, peeled and sliced

Set the oven to 375°F. Grease a 9-inch square baking dish with or pie pan a 4-cup capacity.

Sift the flour, baking powder, and salt.

In a bowl, combine 1/2 a cup of the sugar with the cinnamon, set aside.

In the bowl of an electric mixer, cream the butter with the remaining 1/2 cup sugar. Beat in the egg until blended. Add the flour mixture in three additions, alternating with the milk, beating until just combined.

Spread half the batter in the baking dish. Lay the apple slices on the batter so they just cover the batter (you may have to overlap some slices). Sprinkle the apples with half of the cinnamon-sugar mixture. Spread the rest of the batter over the apples. Sprinkle the remaining cinnamon-sugar on top.

Bake the cake for 25 minutes or until it is golden brown and apples start to bubble at the edges.

Collection of Quotes

“I’ve played three presidents, three saints and two geniuses - and that’s probably enough for any man.”

“Society mends its wounds. And that’s invariably true in all the tragedies, in the comedies as well. And certainly in the histories.”

“Political correctness is tyranny with manners.”

Pizza.com

mid-morning on Saturday, the 5th of April 2008 by Chad

via BBC NEWS

A US man has sold the domain name pizza.com for $2.6m (£1.3m) - after maintaining the site for just $20 a year since 1994.

That’s quite an investment.  Of course, the domain name transfer took longer than 30 minutes so the buyer got the name for free.

Cleaning House

at around evening time on Thursday, the 3rd of April 2008 by Chad

So Pirate-King’s first post was on the end of April, 2003.  Been around for about 2200 posts from various authors.  Some people post a lot like me and Anarchy, others posted only once or twice, the slackers.

The other day I did a huge cleanup at the database level to get rid of all the weird characters I could find from the various conversions of ANSI to Unicode and UTF-8 and all that meaningless drivel.

Today I just cleaned up the Ships of the Fleet, my blogroll located on the sidebar.  It’s pretty much in line with my RSS reader’s listing.  But anyone who has a blog that reads here and isn’t on the list, please let me know by commenting if you want a link.  Or if you’re just starting up and need a few readers sent your way, same thing…

I really really hate people who do crap like this.

Found this over at Cheat Seeking Missiles.  Luckily the moron (moran?) responsible has a nice email address of jeffrey.moran@absolut.com.

* Update 4/13/08

Looks like Absolut has apologized.  Yeah whatever… in the meantime Skyy Vodka steps up for history with a statement supporting the US.

Maple Pork Chops

in the early evening on Tuesday, the 1st of April 2008 by Chad

6 pork chops
Oil as needed for browning
1/4 cup chopped onion
1 Tbsp vinegar
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/4 cup maple syrup
1/4 cup water
1 Tbsp Worcester sauce
Salt to taste
Flour as needed to thicken the gravy

Preheat the oven to 400°F. Lightly brown the pork chops in a small amount of oil, then place them in a flat baking dish with sides.

Combine the other ingredients in a small saucepan and heat until warm; pour over chops. Cover and bake for 45 minutes, basting occasionally.

Place the pork chops on a warming platter and pour the sauce into a saucepan. Thicken it slightly with flour to make a gravy, salt to taste, and serve it over the chops.

Serves 4 to 6, depending on the size of the pork chops.
