From the Obituary Column…
Frederic Arthur (Fred) Clark, who had tired of reading obituaries noting other’s courageous battles with this or that disease, wanted it known that he lost his battle as a result of an automobile accident on June 18, 2006. True to Fred’s personal style, his final hours were spent joking with medical personnel while he whimpered, cussed, begged for narcotics and bargained with God to look over his wife and kids.

The earliest pirates
Sea Peoples (Haunebu in Egyptian) is the term used for a mysterious confederacy of seafaring raiders who sailed into the eastern shores of the Mediterranean, invaded Cyprus, Hatti and the Levant, and attempted to enter Egyptian territory during the late 19th dynasty, and especially year 8 of Ramses III of the 20th Dynasty. The term “Sea Peoples” was never used in Egyptian records, but has been popularized in the 19th century.

Always been a fan of SuSE linux over the competition. Redhat back in RH9 days was nice, and I used it for a few things, but each time I feel I would have been better served using SuSE. SLED 10 (SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop for the uninitiated) is now out, and reviews on it are pretty nice. 10 outta 10 nice. So with Vista coming out in the next few years, now’s the time to try an alternative that might let you keep your existing PC without having to dump in thousands in hardware upgrades.

National Geographic on pirates…
Piracy may seem like a romanticized scourge of the past.
In reality, piracy is flourishing from Sumatra to Somalia, and today’s pirates are far from the lovable rogues who populate swashbuckling movies like the new Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.
Damn… I hope someone still considers me a lovable rogue…

MediaPost Publications - ABC Looks Beyond Upfront To DVR, Commercial Ratings Issues - 07/06/2006
ABC HAS HELD DISCUSSIONS ON the use of technology that would disable the fast-forward button on DVRs, according to ABC President of Advertising Sales Mike Shaw, with the primary goal to allow TV commercials to run as intended.
“I would love it if the MSOs, during the deployment of the new DVRs they’re putting out there, would disable the fast-forward [button],” Shaw said.
While MSOs risk losing some of their DVR customers if fast-forwarding were blocked, Shaw said the cable operators–who are beefing up their own local ad sales operations–”are in the same business we’re in.” “They’ve got to sell ads too,” he said. “So if everybody’s skipping everybody’s ads, that’s not a long-term business model for them either.”
Shaw also threw cold water on the idea that neutering the fast-forward option would result in a consumer backlash. He suggested that consumers prefer DVRs for their ability to facilitate on-demand viewing and not ad-zapping–and consumers might warm to the idea that anytime viewing brings with it a tradeoff in the form of unavoidable commercial viewing.
It’s a good thing that ABC has nothing worth watching. Because these guys need the cluebat shoved up someplace really dark and smelly.
The term “unavoidable commercial viewing” is absolutely disgusting. This Mike Shaw guy proves that when a lawyer or politician is in a car accident and has most of the brain removed, leaving only their morals but no intelligence, they go into advertising.

Silliness of the day…
Linda Walker awoke in hospital to find her distinctive Newcastle accent had been transformed into a mixture of Jamaican, Canadian and Slovakian.
The 60-year-old may have Foreign Accent Syndrome, where patients speak differently after a brain injury.
Kinda makes sense, eh man?

More pirate attacks in Indonesia
Pirates in the Malacca Strait have attacked two UN-chartered ships and threatened a Japanese cargo carrier, a maritime watchdog has said.
The UN ships were set for Indonesia’s Aceh province when they were attacked on Sunday, said Noel Choong of the International Maritime Bureau.
The pirates stole some cash and construction materials belonging to the UN’s World Food Programme.
The Japanese ship’s crew repulsed an attack on Tuesday.
Sad part is, pirate booty is now down to 20$, buncha 2×4’s and drywall.

Here’s the real reason why the Ten Commandments can’t be displayed in a courthouse. You cannot post “thou shalt not steal,” “thou shalt not commit adultery” and “thou shalt not lie” in a building full of lawyers, judges and politicians without creating a hostile work environment.
