As everyone probably knows, I’m a bit opinionated about what’s hot and what’s not in the film industry. I make judgment calls on films (before actually seeing them) which are based on premise, cast, director, writer, etc. Well… I’m not always right… but that’s why I call these opinions. If I razzed a film that I later discover to be worth the effort, I’ll print a retraction. Plus… if you don’t want to listen to me, then go drop your $8 per movie at your own risk and you can be the judge.
Anyway… so far today I’ve had 4 different people come up to me and ask… "What should I go to see in December?" Hating to repeat myself, I decided this was worthy of a post.
OK… here are my thoughts.
The Producers — Release Date: Dec 16th (limited) – You know… no matter how many times I hear the song "Springtime for Hitler", it never fails to make me giggle… it’s probably a throwback from years of watching Hogan’s Heroes. This big screen production of the Broadway smash is definitely a must see in my book. I resolve to see every Mel Brooks film at least once… and this one has promise. Now… you can NOT do "The Producers" without Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. However, I’m not sure if I agree with the casting of Uma Thurman… but only a viewing will tell.
Memoirs of a Geisha — Release Date: Dec 9th (limited), Dec 23rd (wide) — I’m betting that this film will have the same end result both "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "Sleepy Hollow" did on me. I will most likely find it to be a "very pretty" film… but lacking in content. Ziyi Zhang and Michelle Yeoh may be the names that most people recognize… but I’m betting the real babe is going to be Li Gong (pic).
Fun with Dick and Jane — Release Date: Dec 21st — I usually don’t go in for Jim Carrey films… or for Remakes. Of which this is both… however, I’m willing to give it a chance, but I’m only going to recommend Netflixing it. I can’t see it being worth the price of admission… but the original film was entertaining… so I’ll give it a single watch.
King Kong — Release Date: Dec 14th — Yet another remake… but one I hope has promise. Peter Jackson earned a bit of my respect with the Rings trilogy (not alot, but enough) to make me sit up and take notice when he puts his name against a product. I’m hoping his desire to "stay true to the original text" has bled over onto this film. It’s got my approval… plus… I’ll go see just about anything that stars Jack Black.
Cheaper by the Dozen 2 — Release Date: Dec 21st — OK… the first film was in NO WAY true to the original film (and in my opinion if you are going to remake a film, then you should be true to the original… if you’re not, then don’t use the same title… call it something else.) Now… a sequel. Unless you’re a hard core Steve Martin / Hilary Duff / Tom Welling fan… then go waste your money on something else. If you have nothing else to do with it… then send it to me so I can buy a new computer.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe — Release Date: Dec 9th — As a child, I remember reading the C.S. Lewis series… well… some of it anyway. This book was a thin read that left alot to the imagination… so there’s really no way it can fit into everyone’s vision of what it’s supposed to look like. So… the choice is yours. From the previews, I can see that it’s visually appealing… but it’s full of newcomers. A tough call. From it’s PG rating (which is probably just for the battle sequences)… I’d say this film is probably worth seeing if you’ve got kids with you.
