Federal Judge: Declaration is Unconstitutional!

CHICAGO - In a surprise ruling, a federal judge has held that the Declaration of Independence, penned in 1776 by Thomas Jefferson, is unconstitutional. He ordered that neither the Federal government nor any state or local government could spend any government money to print, teach, display, or advocate the reading of the Declaration, the American Civil Liberties Union announced Tuesday.

U.S. District Judge Blanche Badwing’s order stems from a 1999 lawsuit by the ACLU of Illinois that claimed that government sponsorship of the Declaration violates the First Amendment because it mentions God in numerous places.

Justice Department spokesman Charles Miller said Thursday the government was still considering its options. “We are confident that an appeal to the 7th Circuit will return everything to the status quo,” Miller said.
