World altering events

mid-morning on Tuesday, the 1st of March 2005 by Chad

Stephen Green over at Vodkapundit has an excellent essay about the differences and similarities between taking Iwo Jima and the war in Iraq.
Often when reading some wonderful usage of the language, some particular phrasing really stands out as something wonderful. I got that feeling when I read this paragraph:

Today’s atom bomb is democracy in the Middle East … and it’s been dropped on Iraq. The fallout has spread far and wide, to Saudi Arabia, to Egypt, to Palestine, and perhaps even to Syria and Iran. Its effects could well bring an early conclusion to today global war, sparing thousands of lives on each side.

Read the whole thing, its a wonderful posting. But that one line, Today’s atom bomb is democracy in the Middle East … and it’s been dropped on Iraq, that really gets to the heart of the matter.
The world changed when the atom bombs were dropped. It ended a war unprecedented in scope. And prevented who knows how many future grand scale wars.
I hope that it is true that liberating Iraq will be on the same scale of human events.
