Chaddo

just before lunchtime on Sunday, the 27th of March 2005 by Chad

Lots of people think my name is short for Chadwick.  Ummm… no, and until the other day I had never met a Chadwick in my life.

Ever wonder what your name in Japanese would look like?  This is "Chad" translated.
Chaddo

It is pronounced Chad-do.  Hehheh… I still like that much better than "Chadwick."

The script is katakana and is used to render foreign names. The kanas (kata, hiri, furi) represent individual syllables, with their placement in reference to the previous character affecting the previous character’s sound.

In your case, the Chi- sound becomes Chya (say as one syllble) since the Ya kana is slightly smaller (or lowercase) than the chi. The ya is also followed by the “chisai tsu” or “small tsu” character which acts as a guttoral stop - emphasizing the previous character.

Without any of the mods I mentioned your name would sound like chi-ya-do. With the lowercase ya and the chisai-tsu we get

    Chya’-do

Much better and a more accurate rendering of your name.

While this sounds all rather confusing, gaijin can learn the kanas in about two weeks. In Country, this gives you the ability to read about 20-50% of signs, ads, and other written items.

However, anything really important is still rendered in full-blown bust your balls Japanese kanji.
