depression era inspiration..

late at night on Thursday, the 4th of December 2008 by Gypsy

This article is interesting.. I was just chatting with a Walgreen’s employee the other day, she was going on about the economy… I said there are still those who experienced the depression still among us.. we should definitely seek their wisdom!

Obviously some of the wisdom from the depression era is surfacing.. I also think this was inspired by the Wal-Mart employee trampling incident.. Share your thoughts and views.. and tap the minds of those who lived through the depression.. and please share… they have allot to offer!

Two neighborhoods in Milwaukee are considering printing their own currency, which could be bought with U.S. dollars, but would be only accepted at local businesses, in order to encourage people to shop at home instead of Wal-Mart.

It’s not a new concept — the Chicago Tribune says that lots of towns and neighborhoods relied on their own local currency during the Great Depression. It’s also perfectly legal.

So what’s the advantage for shoppers? Well, the currency could offer incentives — trading $100 US for $110 in the local currency would give shoppers a 10% bonus, for example.

What do you think? Would you use a local currency in order to support your community? Or are you going to shop at Wal-Mart until they pry the cart from your cold dead hands?

Like we talked about last night:
I’m sure the government will shut this down faster than it covers up a congressional scandal involving democrats.
Technically, even barter is supposed to be taxed at full value. While the article says “its also perfectly legal” I have to doubt that, since there are so many laws now that everyone at every point in time is breaking at least one law just by existing. I’m sure the IRS or the Treasury will come down and somehow either outright ban it through regulations or inject their own processes into it that will make it an even worse deal.
Plus, that 10% bonus they’re talking about. That has to come from somewhere. If you “make up money” out of the blue the laws of economics adjust the value to make up for it.
