Punishments have become too touchy-feely!

Mexican woman plows over..and Kills another woman.. in a parking lot. The reason.. she was depressed! I guess insanity pleas are getting too much of a run huh?
The widower pittied the killer. the judge pitied the murdered.. everyone pitied hit-n-run killer!
I have personally dealt with depression.. it has yet to make me actually run over some poor soul (the desire, sure.. but execution of it.. nope).. and in a parking lot.. she had to have really laid on the accelerator to manage to kill this woman in a parking lot! She had blood on her front bumper and tire..so when she eventually stopped, aside from seeing the body in front of her, feeling the thud and the bump.. what did she think when she saw her bloody car?
The widower is too kind too.. saying it can’t bring his wife back. I hate that response.. sure it won’t bring the dead back.. and yes he is a far better person than i am.. because if someone ran over my hubbie i would be demanding to hand out the death sentence.. as well choose the method!
So get the slap on the wrist she gets for murder.. and it being a hit & run too! "careless driving"… was even dropped.. ARGH! The most she would have received is 6 years if they gave her the max sentence.. ARRRRGGGGHHHHH!! (seriously the system needs and overhaul, and I have some suggestions!)
Veronica Prieto-Gudino, 31, pleaded guilty Friday to a felony count of leaving the scene of a crash causing death as part of a deal with prosecutors. A charge of careless driving causing death was dropped.
Fourth Judicial District Judge J. Patrick Kelly could have sent her to prison for up to six years. But he sentenced her to five years unsupervised probation, which means she can return to Mexico. He also ordered 500 hours of community service, unspecified restitution, a mental health evaluation and a stern warning that she live her life "in a way that honors" Madonna "Donna" Head, 65.
"stern warning".. oh man.. now don’t go running over people anymore.. no more killing ok? seriously.. anyone wanna join me in a good scream!?

I always look at the end result. I really don’t give a hoot what the excuse is. If someone ends up dead, it is murder or at least manslaughter.
Being depressed is no excuse. Go into a dark room, pig out on Ben & Jerry’s, watch some weepy chick flick…. But murdering someone else in a fit of depression? Give me a break.
Isn’t there a case in CA, where some idiot parked his car on the train tracks as a “suicide attempt”, chickened out at the last minute, but left the vehicle on the tracks, causing the death of at least 15 innocent commuters? Should he “get off” because he was feeling sad?

One of the things I love on Futurama… the suicide booth… looks like a telephone booth, you enter choose your mode of death.. then your dead body will drop through the trap door.. how prefect.
some people just need to be allowed the right to die.. but not at the risk of others.
while this woman was probably not trying to kill her self.. her actions could have resulted in that.. instead she killed someone else.
katie i am with you.. there are so many ways to deal with depression.. we have enough beautiful trails.. she could have taken a walk or bike ride.. she could have done some yoga (enough of those places around).. she could have gone window shopping.. or hit a theatre.. there are many methods to handle depression… depression sucks but if a person is that done they should not be behind the wheel.
the case sickens me.. and the woman who is dead was a giving person who helped kids and others.. again adds to how unfair and wrong this was.

It snows a lot in Colorado Springs and the parking lot is not always perfectly plowed. That’s no excuse, but it makes what happened a little less unbelievable. Interestingly, Mrs. Prieto told people at the time that she was distracted because she was on the cell phone to the hospital because one of her kids was sick. She backed out, hitting Donna, who incidentally was the was the director of the daycare facility the Prieto children were going to. Donna was walking in the parking lot and was passing behind Mrs Prieto’s parked car. Mrs. Prieto ran over her once when backing out and once more going forward, then drove off, thinking that she had run over a snowbank in the parking lot. Passersby were yelling at her but she apparently did not realize that she was why they were yelling. The passersby rushed to help Donna, but she died on the way to the hospital. Meanwhile, Mrs. P had driven to the daycare (yes, the same one) and without looking at her bumper, she got one of her kids out of the car and delivered the child to daycare. I’m not sure how she missed the blood on the fender coming back to the car; maybe there was not a very large and obvious amount on the upper surfaces? However it happened, she was apparently stunned to hear that she had just killed the director of her children’s daycare by running over her twice and then driving away. There is no way to bring Donna back, but she was a wonderful, caring, far-sighted woman, and it’s sick that there was not more judicial notice of this negligent homicide.
