What is Wrong With Girl Scouts These Days?
in the early morning on Friday, the 26th of September 2008 by Katie
A troop leader was arrested after stealing $3K from her troop.
The girls had sold almost 1,500 boxes of cookies. Their leader received the check of over $3,000 from the Girl Scout council, and instead of depositing the money in the troop account, she deposited the money in her personal account.
The parents discovered that the funds were missing, when the attempted to pay for a group trip to Hershey Park. There was less than $20 in the account. An uncle of one of the girls (and his church) stepped up and paid for the trip.
The parents went to the Girl Scout council with their discovery. They were informed that Girl Scouts would do nothing to help them get their money back. But, they suggested that the parents could take it to the police. Which the parents did.
So, now the leader was arrested. She is out on bail (ironically enough, bail was the same amount of money that she stole from the troop).
The troop was disbanded. The parents yanked their girls from Girl Scouts. Which is understandable. The leader was operating under the umbrella of the Girl Scouts, and had the parents’ trust. She egregiously breached that trust. And Council did nothing to help the parents.
The most disgusting bit of the whole tale, is this. Donations are coming into Girl Scouts, by people who want this troop to get their money back. But, since the troop disbanded, Council is pocketing all of the donated funds, and putting it in their “scholarship funds”. The scholarship fund pays for the application fee of low income girls ($10 application fee, annually). Council has “kindly” informed the parents of this troop, that if they wish to rejoin Girl Scouts, council will waive the $10 fee…
Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice….

More disgusting to me, than the sleazy leader who pocketed the money, is the Girl Scouts apthetic response to the situation and what happened to the troop.. plus how they are simply keeping donations donations to bring a troop back.
I think someone needs to make a new group of girls.. the girl scouts died a long time ago.. whatever is using their name now is horrifying, disappointing and disturbing!

There is an alternative to Girl Scouts in some areas of the United States. American Heritage Girls.

Founded by former Girl Scouts disgusted with the liberal agenda of Girl Scouts.
Regarding above article.
Since the troop was disbanded, the money doesn’t go to the troop. The parents left in disgust, and don’t trust the scouts. You trust that the troop leader is honest and you trust the safety of your kids to this person. I’d never come back, either.
What I think that they should do, however, is give the 3K to these girls for a “blow-out” party. Take them to the beach, Disney, something, and allow them the enjoyment of the money that they earned. The Girl Scouts had already gotten their hefty cut of the cookie money. The money stolen was the 15% that the troop get of the cookie proceeds….
