Hey feminists - here’s the real enemy

just before lunchtime on Saturday, the 6th of September 2008 by Katie

Barbaric Traditions.

A 17 year old girl, who had been forced at the age of 9 to marry a 45 year old man, was killed by her own family when she tried to escape the marriage.

This happened on the heals of another group killing - 3 teenaged girls and 2 of their older relatives, were buried alive because they wanted to choose their own husband.

An official was quoted as saying:  “these are centuries-old traditions and I will continue to defend them”.

I would choose death too if I was forced to marry a man I did not love and egad a man nearly three times my age.. yikes..

Such cultures are odd.. wierd, and creepy! I never understand how anyone can defend such “traditions”.. not all traditions are good, and many should be remembered only as history lessons not as life lessons!

I cannot imagine a country or a culture that condones the killing of their young.

Yet this girl’s “crime” was the desire to leave a forced marriage. She was 9 (2nd or 3rd grade in American terms) when she married someone who was 45 year old (a time when the Beatles were not even formed, JFK was still alive, and TV came in black and white - if you were rich enought to have one). After 8 years of marriage, the 17 year old tried to leave the marriage. That was all. And her own family, the people who should have loved and cared for her, instead, hired a group of people to kill her.

And the government official - sees this act as a proud tradition that should be defended.

That is a centuries old tradition. Started with Mohammed remember? He made marrying 9 year olds respectable.

just because something is old doesnot make it a good thing…

we moved past traveling on foot to horseback to vehicles.

we moved past telegraph, to telelphone to internet.

we moved past people as slaves to all people as part of our society & country.

we moved past many things.. so why on earth does such a backward place believe in holding on to an idea of forcing a child to marry, and too often someone old enough to be her grandpa.. in fact as whacked as they are just might be her grandpa!

I don’t care where the tradition started, if it s a bad idea, it is a bad idea. traditions should always be remembered, for the sake of history, understanding and so forth.. but traditions do not need to be used on a daily basis..

if that were the case we all would be hanging out in the dark ages..
