This was a horrible case recently in the Philly news. A 14 year old girl, bedridden with cerebral palsy, was starved to death by her parents. She also had suffered from bedsores, which were so severe that they had maggots in them. The parents have been charged. And, several people have lost their jobs over this and are also charged with a crime, since the child was under the watch of Child Services.

So, imagine the gall of the parents, who have now chosen to sue the City for their daughter’s death. Looking at the facts, the parents (more specifically the mom, with whom she lived) are the ones who actually failed to give the girl food. But, they are suing the City - did they expect the City to come and actually spoon the food into the child’s mouth for them? The parents are suing for medical costs, funeral expenses, etc. Supposedly for the benefit of the child’s siblings. (Why the parents still have other children in their custody boggles the mind) And an adult sibling of the girl is suing for “mental pain” resulting from her death. Hmmm, what about the mental pain resulting from his cruel parents denying his sister food?

If I murdered someone, should I be able to sue the City because I was able to murder someone (ie, there weren’t any police on the corner where I shot someone or because I am suffering mental pain from murdering someone)?

Maybe the City should countersue the family. I’m sure that the City has probably invested money in the family through medicaid, welfare, food stamps, etc. Maybe the City should be able to recoup its money also…
