Firefox Question about RSS Readers and Foxmarks

in the early evening on Tuesday, the 5th of August 2008 by Chad

OK, I use Firefox 3 and sync between multiple machines with Foxmarks to keep all my shortcuts in sync.

For the longest time I used Sage as my RSS reader.  Worked great, and the last updated time on the RSS feeds would synchronize between systems.

Then FF3 came out, Sage didn’t work, and I went to Sage Too.  But lost the ability to sync the last update between systems.  Seems that Sage would create a hash as part of the shortcut, so it sync’d normally.  Sage Too didn’t which is a pain.

Now Sage is FF3 compatible, so today I moved back to that.  It fixed one horribly annoying bug with Sage Too.  I’d click a link to get the feed, change tabs to read something else and when the feed finally loaded, it would overwrite the tab I’m currently on, not the tab I wanted it to load on.

But one step forward, one step back. Seems that Sage for FF3 no longer syncs the last update with Foxmarks either.  I really like the preview layout that Sage uses.  Just need something that I can sync with.

So here’s my question:  Who knows a good RSS reader that I can sync between systems.  I don’t like the online versions, I’ve seen ‘em.  Don’t like ‘em.  I’d love a FF plugin that works with sync tools, but I’m willing to go with a full GUI app if that is what it takes, as long as it has sync capabilities.

I got no answer for you.

I’ve heard rumors of RSSBandit (a reader that was suggested to me, from this site here) is trying to plug into Google Reader.

That concept is still pre-beta, I believe.

I used to use RSSBandit several years ago but it hasn’t been developed in a long time.
I’ve downloaded and checked out several today, including the latest RSSBandit, Omea Reader, Awasu, and SharpReader.
None are great, Omea is the best, once you turn off all the other stuff that it does. Best feature with Omea is that you can use views, so you can simply view all unread or new posts among the dozens of sites that you read. It’s pretty decent so far, gonna keep playing for a few days.

If it’s been a while since you checked out google reader, you might want to have another look. I’m in the process of switching to it from a standalone reader.

Yup, as part of my exploration yesterday, I checked out google reader again. I had old feeds in there, about 75 of them. All the other online reader sites I checked out again I could delete all the old links in one fell swoop, and then reimport the OPML file. I just didn’t like the interface.
But with google reader, I couldn’t easily manage the group of old links short of deleting each one individually. Which is a poor option and turned me off to it. I plan on spending a little more time today trying it again but not hopeful!

Well, went back to google reader to give it another shot and after manually deleting the feeds and re-adding, found the button to delete all the selected feeds. Weird.
It’s not bad, but not perfect either. They like to put the time of the post based on when google detects it, rather than when it was originally posted on the site, which is part of the RSS feed standard. I do not like that at all.
Plus, they pull new content on their schedule, no way to say update my feeds now. Don’t like that option either.
But for an online only reader, it’s usable I think. Gonna keep giving it a shot while I look for other options.
