Please, Don’t Apologize on my Behalf

in the early afternoon on Friday, the 1st of August 2008 by Katie

So, that House has issued an apology for slavery. I guess they have no other pressing matters - gas is $4 a gallon, we have a war or two or three going on, we have border guards being held in our jails for doing their jobs, illegal aliens are crossing our borders, terrorists still want to kill us, and the gov is spending our money like it is water (need I continue?) - and they did have that important vacation coming up.

OK, I’ll say it. Please don’t apologize on my behalf. Because it would be meaningless from me. I have never owned a slave. My family has never owned a slave. Frankly, some of my family were the indentured servants out working next to the slaves in the fields. The rest of my family were still in Europe, busy not owning slaves. And, even if my family had owned slaves in the past, should I be forever stigmatized by what a family member might have done seven generations ago? Is this the only crime in America that you are forever damned because your ancestor did something over a hundred years ago, that in today’s time (not their time) is morally repugnant? Heck, even Ted Bundy’s kids (if he had any) would be treated better than that.

Slavery is a horrible part of our history. We fought a war, and shed our blood, to rid ourselves of it. We should not forget that we were capable of it. But, we should not demean it by issuing meaningless apologies during an election cycle in order to buy votes.

    DITTO… DITTO!
And actually those who were apologized to should be thanking the rest of us.. think about it.. they could still be in Africa.. dying of starvation or any number of issues going on there!
Sorry I owe no apologies, and will no apologize! And I find it insulting our government would choose to apologize for us… shouldn’t such a thing be put to a vote anyhow if the government is permitted to do such a thing?
