Girl Scouts: Ruined
around lunchtime on Thursday, the 17th of July 2008 by Tina
What happened to the Girl Scouts of America??
When I was a kid it was already a failing organization. Now it is an abomination. They are currently promoting Activism.. yes your local Girl Scouts Organization wants your little girls to be Activists! How scary is that?
I thought it was sad enough when I have endlessly tried to contact our local Girl Scouts over the past years, with absolutely no responses. I was inquiring because one of our focuses has been on adopting a teen girl, and I wanted to connect with the local Girl Scouts to check them out, meet, etc…. But they are completely with out response.
My friend is a troop leader, and she has a hard time getting response as well. Their communication sucks…. and apparently their ideology is even more frightening.
I am all for empowerment.. but there is a difference between empowerment and femi-Nazi activist nut-jobs. And this definitely is teetering if not completely collapsing onto that concept.
How on earth their is even a Girl Scouts with their lack of communication, and horrible organizational abilities..it just bewilders me.
Would love to hear others experiences about Girl Scouts… Discuss please!

Having been a Girl Scout leader for 25 years beginning when I was freshman in college, 19 of them at the Cadette/Senior (middle & high school) level, I can tell you that the program has changed focus dramatically in the past 4-5 years and I don’t think that we have seen anything yet. Just this summer, I turned my troop over to my co-leader as I just couldn’t present the new “Journey” materials to the girls with a straight face nor with any conviction of its worth.
Having review the new materials for the teen age level, I believe that Juliette Gordon Low (founder of GS, now deceased)is turning over in her grave. Although she was probably a radical in her time, I don’t belive that she intended to turn girls into activists and to just look into themselves for the right answers. The GS bill themselves as promoting leadership skills in girls, but they have totally missed the fact that before you can become a great leader, you must first become a great person with morals, values, experience, intelligence & character. As the program stands now, they want the girls to effect change, but seem to be skipping the building blocks of a leader.
Remember all of this is coming from someone who has been a leader for 25 years! I am so disgusted and disappointed in GS that I could cry. But I don’t ever see myself going back or letting my daughters join.
