Tata owns Land Rover and Jaguar

mid-afternoon on Wednesday, the 11th of June 2008 by Chad

So what can you, as a buyer, expect?

Well, Tata Motors is a company in India.  What else is done in India?  Well, both IT and phone support stuff.

Since I’m experienced in IT, here’s what you can expect if things go the same way.

You will purchase a new car.  (New software development)

When it arrives it looks good at first glance.

The more you look into it, the more you realize you have to replace before you can even start the car.  (Run the software)

Pretty soon, you say hell with it, and rebuild the entire car (software package) yourself because it is easier than trying to explain again and again why it doesn’t work.

You go back to the dealer (your VP in charge of software outsourcing) and complain that the car (software development) was completely useless, a waste of both time and money.

The dealer (VP in charge of software outsourcing) blames you for everything, that you should manage expectations correctly, that you didn’t properly communicate what you needed in a car (software package).  Because from the dealer’s (VP in charge of software outsourcing) perspective, since he/she got a big bundle of money in this whole deal, everything is working just perfectly.

Bastards.

    Exactly.
You’ll be interested to hear that the new CTO at your old stomping grounds “here” just killed an offshoring project run by Accenture. They burned through lots of cash, made many pretty documents, and the new CTO said “Very nice, see you.”
He’s from Amex and isn’t a fan of the practice. My kind of guy.

Whats funny is that even guys I know that work for Accenture, a so-called leader in offshoring, hates working with their Indian counterparts offshore.
They apparently don’t know what they’re doing even for basic network administration tasks. So this is pretty interesting…

Oh, and for the rest of the tale told above:
Since the dealer (VP in charge of software outsourcing) is worse than useless in dealing with the issues, you give up, make it a point to simply always rebuild the car from scratch (rewrite all code from scratch) and simply use the Indian team as basic testers instead of the valuable team members they’re supposed to be.

Hello! Welcome to my mind. Sorry about the mess.
