Technology :: Browsing Support Sites

in the early afternoon on Friday, the 25th of January 2008 by Chad

I hate experts-exchange.  The web site.  Because if you have a weird technology issue, it seems to always be in the top 10 google hits.

But the answers on the page are always jumbled up.  So unless you join, you can’t view the answer to your issue.  For a long time I wished there was a way to tell google to just never display the results for that because it was worthless.

Today I found a better answer.

Using the google results against ‘em.

Google rates those pages high because it sees the normal unencrypted page.  So the spider gets the entire contents.  When you view it with your normal browser, their web server sends you garbage content until you sign up.

Why not make your web browser look like the google spider?  In Firefox:

  • Type in the address bar: about:config
  • Navigate to general.useragent.extra.firefox
  • Change the value to Googlebot 2.1

Go and enjoy the unencrypted content.  Works on many many other web sites that let google spiders in but tries to keep you out.

    If you’re using Firefox, you can add the “User Agent Switcher” extension and then import the XML file from http://techpatterns.com/forums/about304.html .

    Off to Expert Sex Change to try my new user agent. Thanks!

    Sweet, it works, now if all the posters on sexperts-exchange were somewhat intelligent. Maybe will find something useful eventually.

    I think most of those guys have been diagnosed with sexlexia, a horrible disease…

The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it.
