Leaving a bad taste in my mouth

mid-morning on Monday, the 24th of December 2007 by Capt Jake Fortune

Let’s see, toys for orphans, food for the needy, or paying for hot water poured through charcoal (Starbucks special blend) for the yuppie scum behind me for the same amount of money I was going to pay anyways. This is pathetic. It’s not kindness, it’s not altruism. It’s a way for greedy people to feel like they’ve done something at Christmas to assuage some of the guilt.

What the hell people?  A Starbucks propaganda scam makes everything think they’re doing good deeds.  All so you idiots will go out and buy more of their crappy “coffee”.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I think it certainly DOES matter how such a gesture begins. So many people aren’t even thinking about the matter of peer pressure. Some social behavior is almost automatic, or instinctual. I don’t think the marketing gurus that Starbucks can afford to hire are just whistling in the dark, wondering if this promotion will work. They KNOW the outcome of their little promotion.

It’s the calculatedness of it that bothers me. If you want to help someone else out, beautiful. But, remember, unless it’s a charity or you’re pushing someone’s car out of a snowbank, someone else has put a price tag on the gesture, even if you, the pure of heart, have not.

Thanks for the place to vent!

I don’t think I’m alone when I say I’d like to see more and more planets fall under the ruthless domination of our solar system.
