Favorite non-IPod

What non-IPod mp3 players do people have that they really like? I’m looking at a few options such as the Sansa or maybe the Zen.
I’m not one that has to have these things plugged in every waking second. So I’m not looking for the ultimate player of all time. I have a few things that I want to see.
- Sturdy, doesn’t feel cheap.
- Doesn’t require software to sync tunes, works with Windows Media Player (WMP) playlists.
- Doesn’t require a special cable, can use a standard miniUSB or microUSB connector.
Now I know most fail when it comes to using a special cable. But no special software is a must. Which is what rules out an IPod. I don’t even want to take a chance with any company using my listening habits as market research. WMP lets you turn off any Internet connectivity which is great. But since Apple thinks they’re on a holy mission, they’re likely to add something like that to ITunes without letting anyone know.
So far the winner seems to be this. The Sansa express. Plugs right into a USB slot. Looks like flash memory. Reviews are mixed just like anything else.
Anyone have a favorite they use?

They can have my Rio Karma when they pry it from my cold dead fingers. That or until it becomes totally FUBARed.
Personal old-school favorite aside, I recently looked for one for my SO for her birthday and ended up with the Sansa E280. I got it for the ability to use it as a standard USB drive or an MTP device, nice interface and because Rockbox has firmware available for it. She’s using it with Winamp Pro and she absolutely adores the thing and after working with it a bit myself I’d probably put it at the top of my list of players that I’d choose to replace my Karma with if necessary. It’s worth checking out if you’re willing to put up with the cable issue.

Chad! You have a blog! And you’ve had it for years! And I didn’t know! I’m sorry.
I have a Sansa m260 and I really like it. I doubt the m-series is still available, though, except used. The e-series should be every bit as good. If I had it to do all over again, though, I’d find a player that will also play ogg vorbis.
My cell phone, an LG VX-8300 (from Verizon), has a reasonably good mp3 player built into it. The downside is that headphones require an adapter. (Whose idea was that?!)

Hey Mike, how ya been?
I have a Verizon XV6700 pocket pc phone that I have a ton of music on. Yesterday I got my first early present, Jabra C820s noise cancelling headphones. They’re really really sweet. Goes up against those 300$ Bose ones, only these are 60-70$. Anyways, they come with that little adapter cable. The idea is that the normal plug for the phone includes a microphone input vs normal headphones that don’t.
But I’m looking for a media player for the Mrs’s… figured I’d get her something halfway decent…

Read something good:
ITunes: It’s like the aol homepage in music download program form.

Heh… I’ve never done AOL or iTunes, so I wouldn’t know for certain, but from the reputation of both, I can believe it.

Creative Zen V 8GB baby! No special cable needed. Can use their software, Windows Media Player or windows explorer for that matter. Does pics also. Great little player!!! Only possible downside is no AC adapter, charges off of USB. A car adapter is sold separately.
