MIT is surely proud about how well their highly intelligent students… fake a bomb in an airport.
Massachusetts State Police arrested a 19-year-old MIT student Friday at Boston’s Logan International Airport after receiving a report that a woman had what appeared to be a bomb strapped to her chest.
The woman arrested at the Boston airport was identified as Star Simpson, an MIT student.

The “device” wasn’t a bomb at all, it was a homemade blinkie toy. The “fake bomb” claim comes from a publicity hound in the state police. Wait, maybe he’s not a publicity hound, maybe he realizes he needs some CYA.

Let me tell a story…
In 1988 at the Keesler Technical Training Center, I built an astable multivibrator feeding a dual LED array. Yeah, a blinkie toy. Tradition held that you wire it into your briefcase with a big red switch near the handle.
That Christmas, I flew home and back carrying that briefcase.
Only once did anyone even look at it. That was getting on the very last plane.
But times have changed since then. And I’m pretty sure just about everyone is pretty darn aware of what’s going on at airports. Since she was from Hawaii, I’m sure she’s flown before to get to Boston.
But then again, maybe everyone in Boston is afraid of blinkie lights.
