The Worst
in the early morning on Sunday, the 19th of August 2007 by Chad
Here’s your standard garden variety seven deadly sins.
Lust Gluttony Greed Sloth Wrath Envy Pride
They’re all pretty bad, but some are worse than others. Historically Pride is shown as the worst, since they say all others flow from that.
But I really do think they shortchanged Greed. Greed is listed as merely the accumulation of wealth. Expand out the definition of Greed to things that you do to feed your inner desires, and Greed takes over lust, gluttony, sloth, and envy.
I’d say in today’s society, Greed is the greatest sin. Not for merely the obvious reasons of CEOs screwing everyone.
Running the red light because you’re in a hurry is an example of greed: your needs and desires to not wait 30 seconds at the light are more important than others who now have to wait.
Basically any time you do not consider the needs of others in search of your base pleasure is pure greed. Lets use… uhhh… my neighbors as an example. It seems every interaction we have with them shows their personal greed. They have a rottweiler. They refuse to correct the dogs behavior when he barks, very loudly, all the time when he is outside. The wife’s excuse is that it might make the dog feel bad if they corrected him by using a shock collar, or swatting him on the nose when he barks constantly. I found this out after I called the Humane Society to report that I couldn’t talk on a conference call, in my home office, because of the background barking. They couldn’t hear me over the noise. So when the HS called the neighbors, the wife came over all indignant because we turned them in. See? That’s greed. She never once apologized even that the dog barked but they weren’t going to do anything about it. Nope, it was our fault that we had a problem apparently. Because we have a hard time even hearing our TV set sometimes. But its a violation of the dog’s rights to not let it out well after 11pm or before 7am so it can bark up a storm. What the wife did not know is that when I talked to the HS and gave them the address, they said, “Oh, we know that address, people complain all the time but won’t leave their names, so we can’t file a complaint.” So I left our name and told her to file the complaint, which meant the wife came over to yell at me.
Apparently their kids are just as bad. All the other neighbors we talk to refer to this couple as the token white trash and their kids are allowed to do anything they want. Which means in the playground they’re little bastards with no control, and all the other parents hate it when they’re out, as it always causes problems. Our issue is that of course they’re the family with the trampoline right up against the fence. That their kids jump and play on, yelling and screaming, at 11:30 at night while the parents get all liquored up partying in their basement.
But oh my god, if anyone every says anything, they’re the victims. That everyone is out to get them.
Their complete inability to empathize with their neighbors is horrible. Two of their neighbors have babies. And this dog’s barking isn’t something you just hear, it is something that will awake you from a sound sleep as an adult. What is wrong with people like this? What major malfunction is happening in their brains?

More examples of greed - the person who sees the traffic jam, and then pretends that the shoulder was his/her own personal lane; or the idiot at the cash register too busy on the bloody phone to actually deign to speak to the cashier, even if it to answer cash or credit.
Or most of the reality programming, which reward the people who completely lack any morals with victory. Which is probably why I actually watch the “Next New Superhero” show - it is nice to see the good guys rewarded.
Completely understand about the neighbor’s dog. We lived next to / on top of an evil Beagle. All night long, that thing howled. Loudly. Right under my bedroom window. To the point that I wanted to buy a gun and shoot targets at 3 in the morning. My thoughtless neighbor’s reaction to criticism? Complaining that the dog made a mess inside and cried. Eventually found myself so sleep deprived that I caught myself insanely yelling profanities at the dog out my window at 3 in the morning.

You know, the more I think about it, the more I believe that sloth is as rampant in this country as pride, and just as bad. Last night, I heard yet another “sob” story about people in New Orleans complaining that the government still needs to help them. Last time I checked, Katrina was nearly 2 years ago, and it is time for them to get off their butts and do for themselves. The federal government was never intended to be the first person that you turn to in times of trouble. Hint one - when you hear that a Cat 5 hurricaine is heading directly towards you, and you live 20 feet below sea level, it is time to pack and go. When they tell you that you should have your meds and enough food and water to survive for a week, they are not making outrageous demands. When they hand you a debit card worth 2K (of my money and of every other taxpayers’ money), do not blow it on strippers the first night.
Or the man suing Mcdonald’s for 10 Mil. It seems as though idiot boy is highly allergic to cheese. He orders Quarter Pounder without cheese. He claims that he told them that he is allergic… He goes into a movie theatre with his mom, sneaking in the burger. He then has a merry meal. And promptly has the “near fatal” allergic reaction. His mom “risks her life” driving him to the hospital (hence her claim for more money). Now tell me, if you were highly allergic to cheese, would you trust your life to the sixteen year old at the drive through? Or do you think that you have some personal responsibility to go so far as to actually check the burger? It’s not like the cheese would have been hiding.
Or the incredible amount of people in this country who really don’t realize that, when they have a joh, they should be there every day, on time (or at least some rough approximation of on time).
Or the hordes of people who were too lazy to look at the Truth in Lending Statement on their mortgages, and are now surprised at the terms that they signed on to. And they also expect the government to bail them out. And I ask, why should the gov? Here I am, in my reasonable home. I looked at the mortgage, I knew what Matt and I signed up for. We didn’t get the most that we could have gotten, but we got what we knew that we could afford. So, tell me, why should my tax dollars go to help someone who did not make the wise choice? Who got more than they could afford. Who never budgeted for the monthly mortgage payment. Whose house is filled with new furniture. Who never bothered to read what they were signing up for in a mortgage. (I am not saying that everyone in a mortgage bind fits this description, but it is amazing how many do)

Thats always been the issue I have with the liberals who think they’re doing good by raising taxes on everyone. Let me see, they have a goal and are unwilling to fund it themselves, so they volunteer everyone to pay for it. That way they get their jollies by doing good without having to put too much personal effort into it.
Widows, orphans, veterans, and the handicapped is my test. Anything tax related going to any special group rather than those four don’t pass with me. Everything else paid by taxes should be of equal value to all, such as roads and bridges, public safety.

Widows - sometimes. These days, women could /should be able to take care of themselves. But yes, help for them if they are older or have children. Orphans - yes, always. Vets - definitely yes - widows of vets - again an always yes. Handicapped - depends. Truly handicapped - yes. But what this government considers “disabled” - only a sometimes. I’ve seen way too many people that collect SS disability who could / should get a job. Like a certain ex-nurse that I know. She can no longer lift the weight of patients. So, she no longer works. In reality, we all know that a qualified nurse could easily get a job at an insurance company, or at a personal injury law firm. But she prefers to do no work. But, that doesn’t stop her from taking long trips on vacation, or from dancing vigorously. Or yes, I dare say it, some of the mental disabilities. Like the people disabled by depression. Maybe if they got off their duffs and worked they’d feel better.
Basically, when the libs raise taxes it is to pay off another of their special interest groups. In other words, the libs are buying votes with our hard earned money.

Support for each group is also relative. Widows I mean usually retired age. Vets get the GI Bill and other benefits, not taken care of for life unless disabled. And for handicapped, I actually meant those from birth. Unless its obvious, like missing limbs, etc. But every effort should be made towards giving all a place to work. All but the worst of the truly handicapped love working.
