Digital Photos: Album sites

in the early evening on Tuesday, the 14th of August 2007 by Tina

We recently had to put together an album for our adoption process… there are several sites out there to make your digital images into a cool album you can hold and keep. I thought I would share what I found…

All are comparable in price… not significant enough to discuss. Each has pros and cons… Some more than others.

What I would avoid? Snapfish, great selection, but the site has too many issues (and a complete lack of customer services).
Dotphoto is just boring, not very creative… but they are cheap (in every sense of the word!).

What I recommend? Photoworks & Mpix. Great service, great items… I loved using Photoworks, while they do not have a lot of options with fonts… they were easy to use, with no site issues, and the customer service was outstanding! (They called me in response to a question… and they processed & shipped FAST!)

I still might consider Shutterfly. I will try them out, and see. They just did not seem very friendly with the images… but that was with the small book, I will see how they fair with the hardbound books (might have better options?) …. Ok taking a quick peek at the hardbound options… same page options as the small book… so you still are restricted. I still think this is one to ponder, really looks like they would create great albums!

Photoworks: (we have ordered from)
Pros
• Nice papers.
• Easy to use.
• No site issues.
• Great customer service!
Cons
• Restricted layouts.
• No font option (at least on the small album).

Mpix: (we have ordered from)
Pros
• Very flexible pix formats.
• FAST Shipping!
Cons
• Textured paper is not friendly with digital pix… but this is an option with these books.

Shutterfly:
Pros:
• Nice pages, nice selection of fonts.
• Layouts, ok pre-sets… not thrilled by them, but they were ok.
• Easy to move pix into album, or move around page (instead of removing from album and having to re-enter it).
• Over-all friendly.
• Options for photo borders (shadow, borders, picture corners, etc… rather neat!)
Cons:
• Restricted layouts.
• Some layouts cut off images, not a lot of options with the picture layouts.

Snapfish: I have long loved the concept of this site, but had not had the chance to really use it till now. (Tried to order from… but their site has too many issues)
Pros:
• Great selection of paper to put your photos on.
• Nice pre-set options to place your photos.
• Nice fonts that coordinate with the paper you chose.
Cons:
• Restricted in how you can lay out pictures.
• Restricted to the chosen font, for your selected paper.
• Site issues… after I loaded some pix, I wanted to add more… the site would not allow it. I tried numerous times; with no success… this leads me to the next con…
• Customer service… poor response… and no resolution, they suggested to just try again in a few days.

Dotphoto:
Pros
• Cheap.
• Great if you don’t want anything creative or interesting.
Cons
• Cheap (not impressed)
• Small book very restricted… 1 image per page.
• Boring look, not very creative… very basic.

I am sure there are more sites.. but these are the top ones I found. Again I really loved Snap-fish, if they could get their site to work, and hadbetter customer service, i would love to use them.. they had great options! I was having fun creating a book on that site, until it just could take no more. Love to hear your experiences, and if there is a site you enjoy!
