Bumper Sticker Mentality

terribly early in the morning on Thursday, the 26th of April 2007 by Chad

“I support the troops but not the war” is just like saying “I support teachers but not education.” - Michael E. Terry, Colorado Springs

Drove behind one of those “progressive” young ladies coming home the other night. She had one of those bumper stickers saying “Ignorance and prejudice is no way to conduct foreign policy.” Of course this is an obvious slam on the right wing. I counter with “Happy thoughts and drum circles is no way to conduct foreign policy.” Just as descriptive of the left wing in America now isn’t it? Of course it’s irrelevant that to these folks they don’t imagine that there are hordes of professional bureaucrats in federal service whose jobs are to prevent ignorance and prejudice. Who exist for no other reason than to write paper after paper on every single topic about every single other country. Nope, she imagines that Bush sits at his desk, throws darts at some map and calls the generals on his red phone to bomb the hell out of them. I’m starting to think the ignorant fool was inside the car.

But, people who post political stickers on their cars are just as bad as women drivers* on cell phones. The only thing you can do is shake your head at how stupid they are, and hope that they don’t get someone killed.

* Before you start whining, while driving home I counted 14 people talking on their phones while driving. 3 dangerously enough that other cars had to swerve. All were women.

I had to follow a vw bug through town that must have been held together with the bumper stickers. Most of the stickers proved to me that the driver was no one that I’d want to have a coffee with. Besides the stickers telling me that “breasts were for babies, stupid”, and the seemingly contradictory one supporting the woman’s right to choose, she still had the Gore for ‘00 stickers and the Kerry ‘04 stickers on her car (so, she must have known that the ‘00 election had occurred). Then she had to include the mantra ones like “Bush lied and people died”. And in my mind flashes a picture of me, driving the big gas guzzling carbon emitting mini van, and squashing the bug in front of me.

And I am a cell phone narc. I watched a school bus driver yap away on her (yes Chad another her) cell phone, as she picked up kids, for at least 5 minutes. As soon as I got home, I called the school to report her. Heck, my kids will be getting on her bus next year, and she had better not even bring the bloody cell on the bus…

I take public transportation which means that I get to talk on my cell all I want :). I also get to read books, catch up on the latest news, and even check my email. Maybee I’ll post something tommorow morning on my way to work (if I see a car with too many bumper stickers, that is).

Seriously though, cell phones are a major problem. I have never seen anything like a bus driver chatting away, but I don’t doubt it. Good for you for reporting her. Too be fair to women, though, my father is the worst person that I have ever seen about talking on his cell phone. He is a busy person, and I think that he considers driving time to be time to catch up on calls that he needs to make. By now, it is such a habit that he actually feels a need to be talking on his phone while driving. Incidentally, that is while he is driving around his huge gas guzzling truck that could take out several normal size cars in one motion.
