Pistol Bleg

just before lunchtime on Monday, the 16th of April 2007 by Chad

OK… I’ve got a few options I’m looking at.  Pros/cons from those in the know please!

Walther P99Sig P2022 or Sig P229.   Maybe the new Springfield Armory EMP.

I really like the ergonomics of the Walther, but finding the DA/SA action is almost impossible.  I also have never shot incredibly well with it.  Have never shot the Sigs or the EMP.

With standard semiauto pistols, I have always shot best with an HK Tactical in .45 but that is a little out of my price range.  Also its a bit large for what I’m looking for.  Maybe if it came in single stack but I still shot well with it…

Now, since it will be a while before I can shell out any cash I have some time to ponder.  I’m hoping the local rental range lets me try out the Sigs, but I know it will be a while before anyone has the EMP.

The only H&K worth having is the P7M8. They’re WAY too expensive…I wish I bought one 6 years ago when they were “just” expensive.

Oh well…I’m a Glock bigot anyway. I can get 2 (probably 3) of them for what I’d way for a P7.

That’s assuming, of course, I was actually looking to get another gun[1].

[1] Let it be said that I am always looking to get another gun.

Hehhehh… The P7M8 is very nice. The rest are a bit more expensive than they’re worth IMHO. Which is why its not in my list to check out. I’d like a P229, but thats almost as expensive as the HKs. Which is why the front runner is now the P2022 “Sig Pro”.

As for the Glocks, I’ve just never been one for the Glock trigger. I’m a fingertip shooter, and always get pinched. At least with your Glock!

  3. Damo Says:

Double stack .45s tend to have large grips. Have you tried a G17? I’ve shot one a few times and they’re very nice. I want to get a G17 (compensated). I like .45s but when you shoot a few hundred rounds through it your wrist tends to hurt.

As for the finger pinch you can always tape it down or tweak the trigger to remove it.

Anyway…a common complaint I hear is the heavy trigger pull. Some folks just can’t get used to it.

  4. Chad Says:

That’s the Glock version of DAO right? I’ve always liked the double/single action. Also high on my list is a classic or cowboy action revolver. Very light trigger pull makes for a more accurate firearm all else considered. Downside is the “safety” aspect. Thats why with revolvers it is load one, skip one, load four.

  5. Damo Says:

Some revolvers have a protective plate to keep it from automagically discharging.

Mebbe in the hands of novice I’d buy the “light trigger pull” argument — but I tend to think (and know) that training overcomes all.

Whatever you prefer you had better go out and buy it now before the next round of gun control laws start being written.

  6. Chad Says:

Actually pricing went up a lot right after the Dems were elected. However, the majority of the commentary out there has been “why weren’t any of the VT students or profs concealed carry”… so I doubt something will happen.

As for the training: You’re right in that training can overcome the problem of the heavier trigger pull for most people. Cops use DAO of course… But for me and almost everyone I’ve shot with, DA/SA or just SA is a lot easier, accurate, and fun.

For example, several of us fired the Walther p99 in their DAO config… and everyone hated it.

  7. Damo Says:

Everyone hates it yet most tactical pistols have it? Now wait a second here…

Oh well I guess it is a matter of personal taste. Of which you obviously have none. :)

    Oh you bitches! hhehehh…
For a concealed carry, DAO is the way to go. For cop guns, ditto. Thats why most tactical guns have it as an option on one of their models. The Walther has SA/DA and DAO. The Sigs the same.
For target? The 8-10 lb trigger pull on most is a bit much. A nice 2.5-5 lb single action is nice.
Now, those modified DAOs that go off half cocked in the 5-8 range which is what I think the Glocks do, they’re not nearly as bad, but do take getting used to. The Springfield XD is DAO and has a 5.5 lb trigger.
The Walter P99QA is at the top of that range at 8 lbs, and while it would be great for concealed and short range, it was just tough keeping a good group going at longer range. Their P99AS is an 11/5 lb standard DA/SA.
The Sig p229 and p2022 I’m looking at is 10/4.5. Your standard Springfield 1911 is about 5-6 lbs, while many get a trigger job to lessen that a bit to a 4.5.

But anyways, I’m just old fashioned… I like my women in long skirts and pearls, and my handguns DA/SA.

The Walther P99 AS (the DA/SA version) was not imported for about a year or so, but they’re being imported again, so they should become easier to find.

I’ve got one in .40 S&W, and I really like it a lot.

I don’t think you can go wrong with a SIG. I’ve fired my buddy’s P229 and it was most excellent.

1911’s are wonderful, if well put together in the first place, or rebuilt well. SA is supposed to be top notch in building theirs.

If you don’t mind used, CDNN Investments (http://www.cdnninvestments.com/) frequently has police trade ins, that are often factory rebuilt before sale. They also get a lot of factory rep samples for sale, that have lots of handling but little firing. Their current catalog doesn’t have any pistols in it, but they are usually a quarter of the catalog.

    I recommend all 4.

  10. Chad Says:

See, by telling me they’re all wonderful doesn’t help me make my decision!

I do think I’m going to go with the P2022… That’s just a damn good number, since it was my flight in BMT. So it’s a sign!

Plus, I can plug in the DAO module for the trigger in it to make Damo happy.
